Forge editor plugin.
Setup and help.

Use Claude Code or Codex from a dockable Unreal Engine tab. The bridge runs locally; your selected AI provider handles model requests.

Requirements

  • Windows 10 or 11, Win64, Unreal Engine 5.6, 5.7 or 5.8. Each engine version needs its matching plugin package. A verified 5.7 package is not currently available.
  • Claude Code and/or Codex installed and on PATH. Install and sign in using the provider's own instructions: Claude Code setup or Codex CLI setup.
  • A provider account with suitable model access and an internet connection. Your provider's plan, usage limits, privacy settings and charges apply separately. Forge does not include an AI subscription.
  • A normal windowed editor session with Unreal's WebBrowser/CEF components available for the chat panel.

The plugin descriptor enables engine dependencies including PythonScriptPlugin, EditorScriptingUtilities, GameplayTagsEditor, DataValidation and EnhancedInput. Optional features such as Niagara need their corresponding engine plugins.

No Forge account is required. After installation, the Unreal panel works independently. Forge Desktop can stay closed.

Install and open

  1. In Forge Desktop, select your project and choose Install Forge or Update Forge.
  2. Close that project's editor before installation. If Forge owns the running editor, use its explicit save, close, install and reopen action. The installer checks the engine version and package checksum before replacing files.
  3. Open the project in Unreal. Enable Forge under Edit > Plugins if needed, then restart when Unreal requests it.
  4. Open Window > Forge or use the Forge toolbar button.
  5. Choose an installed agent, model and effort, then start a chat.

A current installation shows Forge up to date. Plugin installation for the current public release is managed through Desktop.

The Fab edition is in preparation. No live or approved Fab listing is implied by this documentation. Source builds require Unreal's supported C++ toolchain.

Your first task

Start small: “Inspect this level” or “Build a room blockout with one doorway.” Expand tool calls to inspect the work; use Stop to end the agent.

Forge provides editor operations for Blueprints, graph wiring, declarative blockouts and geometry checks, materials, UMG, Niagara, animation and runtime inspection. Availability depends on the editor's enabled plugins. The bundled guides help agents discover the commands available in that session.

Check the result before relying on it. Read validation and compile results, save assets, run a suitable playtest and review the visual result. An agent's completion message alone is not proof.

Sessions and restart recovery

Unreal chats are stored in Saved/Forge/Sessions. Closing Unreal ends the child CLI processes. An intentional Forge restart preserves the session and provides a continuation message afterward.

Save-and-restart skips packages known to be affected by a caught crash and reports them. Unsaved affected changes may be lost. Keep normal backups and version control; recovery cannot guarantee every change survives.

What Desktop adds

Forge Desktop separately provides project management, multi-project scheduling, hidden editors and per-turn file restore points. Those features are not part of the standalone Unreal panel.

Unity

The Unity package is com.forge.bridge. Install or update it through Forge Desktop with the project editor closed, then reopen Unity.

Open Window > Forge or Tools > Forge for connection information, settings and client setup. The Unity window is not an in-editor chat panel. Use Forge Desktop or a supported external MCP client for agent conversations.

Keep copied client configuration private: it can contain the local bridge's authentication token. Do not commit credentials to version control.

Privacy and permissions

The bridge listens on loopback and authenticates with a per-editor token. Local transport does not mean that model processing is offline: selected project context and tool results may be sent to the provider used by your CLI.

  • Agents can change project assets and files and run provider CLI tools with your account's access. Review the provider's permissions and privacy settings before using confidential projects.
  • Unreal discovery data is stored under Saved/ForgeBridge; chat history is under Saved/Forge/Sessions. Sessions can contain prompts and project tool output.
  • Keep credentials private. Do not share private connection URLs, token files, runtime discovery files or raw logs containing credentials.
  • The editor plugin requires no Forge-hosted inference or Forge telemetry. Optional Desktop update and package downloads are separate network requests.

Troubleshooting

No agent appears in the picker
Install and authenticate Claude Code or Codex, ensure its executable is on PATH, then restart Unreal so it receives the updated environment.
Provider sign-in or usage-limit error
Resolve the account or limit issue with that provider. Forge does not supply model access or bypass provider limits.
The panel says its browser is unavailable
Use a normal windowed Unreal session with the engine's WebBrowser/CEF components installed. A headless or rendering-disabled editor cannot display the panel.
Install or update is refused
Close the editor that owns the selected project. Never replace loaded plugin DLLs. Use save, close, install and reopen only when Forge controls that editor.
The engine version is unsupported
Use a matching verified package for UE 5.6, 5.7 or 5.8. Renaming a package does not make its binaries compatible with a different engine version.
The bridge reports a degraded state
The agent can call editor_restart. Review any packages excluded from saving and validate the project afterward. Forge Desktop can reconnect its working agent after the restart.
A feature or command is unavailable
Check whether its engine plugin is enabled, then restart if Unreal requires it. Optional domains report unavailable dependencies rather than silently enabling every engine plugin.
The Unity Forge window has no chat composer
That window provides connection settings and client setup. The dockable chat panel is an Unreal feature.

Still investigating? Record the engine and Forge versions, the failed action and the exact error. Keep a sanitized excerpt of relevant logs, excluding connection tokens and credentials. This page is the current public help reference; a monitored seller support channel will be specified before Fab submission.
